Apple's First Foldable Raises an Old Question
Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo in September, and it reaches stores on October 23, 2026, starting at $1,999. As a shop that repairs Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold phones every week, we keep coming back to two questions: how well will the folding inner screen hold up over time, and what will it cost to fix when it doesn't?
We don't have the answers yet, and neither does anyone else. Here is what is known today, what we see on our own repair bench, and where the open questions are.
What Apple Has Said About the Inner Screen
In its announcement, Apple describes a 7.6-inch inner display with high-strength glass above and below the folding panel, custom adhesives that let the layers glide past each other, and a hinge built from more than 100 components that supports the center of the display. The phone is rated IP68.
What Apple has not published is how many folds the display and hinge were tested for, or what an out-of-warranty screen replacement costs. Those two numbers are what most buyers want to know, and we'll update this post when they are available.
What We See on Our Own Bench
This part is based on our shop's experience, not on industry-wide data. The phones we see are, by definition, phones that needed a repair, so this is not a measure of how often foldables fail in general.
With that said: among the Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold phones brought to us, more now come in for problems linked to the flex cable that runs through the hinge than for cracked glass. The symptoms are usually touch that stops responding, or a screen that only works at certain angles or not at all. That flex cable is part of the screen assembly, so the fix is usually a full inner screen replacement rather than a small part. We have seen this pattern across several generations of Samsung foldables. It suggests that routing a cable through a hinge that bends thousands of times is a hard engineering problem, not an easy one. Whether Apple's hinge and cable design behaves differently over years of use is something only time will show.
What Foldable Screen Repairs Cost Today
Samsung's official out-of-warranty prices for its 2026 foldables, as reported from Samsung's US support pages:

Prices are before tax. On an older foldable, a repair at this level can come close to what the phone is worth on the used market, which is why many owners end up weighing repair against replacement.
It Likely Won't Be a Screen-Only Repair
On Samsung foldables, a screen repair uses a part where the screen and the frame come combined as one assembly. The inner screen is not replaced on its own. That is one reason foldable screen repairs cost what they do.
We expect the iPhone Duo to work in a similar way. Unlike other iPhone models, where only the cracked screen is replaced, we think an iPhone Duo inner screen repair will likely replace the inner screen and the frame together as one unit. Whether Apple will also take care of transferring your data in that case is not clear yet. Back up your phone before any repair.
Our Estimate for the iPhone Duo: Around $999
This is a guess, not a number from Apple. We base it on two things: Apple's flat-screen repairs are already in the several-hundred-dollar range (an iPhone 18 Pro Max screen is $379), and a folding display with glass layers above and below the panel is a more complex part than Samsung's. Apple's actual price could be higher or lower. When Apple lists it, we'll update this post.
Should You Get AppleCare+ for an iPhone Duo?
For a first-generation foldable with no published repair price, we think it's worth serious consideration. AppleCare+ for iPhone Duo is reported at $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year, with a $99 fee for inner display damage and $29 for the outer display or back glass. If you skip it, a case that protects the hinge and a protector for the outer screen are the minimum.
