If Your iPhone Restarts Every 3 Minutes, Like ClockworkThe cause is almost always one of a few things — why it happens and how it gets fixed
The screen goes black, the Apple logo appears — and about three minutes later it happens again. And again. If the reboots are not random but land on an almost exact 3-minute cycle, that is not a glitch. It is a very specific signal your iPhone is sending. Here is why the interval is three minutes, what actually causes it, what you can check at home, and what has to be fixed on a repair bench.

Why exactly three minutes — meet the watchdog
Inside every iPhone is a mechanism that watches whether the system is healthy. Three minutes is its patience.
Your iPhone watches itself
iOS runs core processes — thermal management, power management and others — around the clock, and a watchdog checks that each one keeps reporting in on time. When the reports stop, it restarts the entire system.
A dead sensor silences the reports
Whether it is the proximity sensor or a temperature sensor, these processes need sensor data to do their job. If one sensor line fails and the data stops arriving, the process stalls — and the moment the watchdog's time limit (about 3 minutes) runs out, the phone force-restarts.
So the 3 minutes is a clue
Rebooting does not fix the broken sensor, so three minutes after every restart it happens again — an endless loop. Put the other way around: a precise 3-minute cycle is itself strong evidence that some essential component has gone silent.
The real causes — six suspects, in order
Ranked roughly by how often we actually see them on the repair bench.
A failed proximity sensor
The most common cause we see in real repairs. The proximity sensor — the part that turns the screen off against your ear during calls — is one of the components the system polls constantly. When its line fails, the phone very often goes straight into the 3-minute loop. It shows up frequently after drops and after screen repairs.

Suspect number two. The charging port flex carries more than the connector — it also holds lines, including a temperature sensor, that report to the system constantly. It is the part most exposed to moisture and impact, and when one of its lines breaks, the symptom is the same.

This one often appears weeks or months after the water exposure, not right away. Corrosion creeps along slowly until the day it severs a sensor line — and the loop begins. We regularly find corrosion in phones whose owners are sure they were never wet. Bathroom humidity or rain is enough.

A battery carries more than power — it has a data line reporting temperature and health. An aged battery, a low-quality aftermarket battery, or a connector damaged during a previous replacement can cut that signal and cause the same loop.
Fixed by replacementA component on the logic board
When swapping parts does not clear the symptom, the silent component is on the board itself. That is board-level repair territory — microsoldering — and it belongs at a shop with the right diagnostic equipment and experience.

A botched iOS update or corrupted system files can also cause repeated restarts — but those loops tend to be irregular. A precise 3-minute cycle makes software unlikely, though it is still worth ruling out once, in the right order.

Before bringing the phone in, work through these steps — in this order.
Back up. Before anything else.
A backup can be started even between restarts. Go to Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup
and back up now, or connect to a computer. Every step after this one is far less stressful with a backup in place.
Read the panic log — the note your iPhone leaves behind
Every forced restart writes a record. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics &
Improvements → Analytics Data and look for files starting with panic-full. If a new one
appears with every reboot, a hardware panic is all but confirmed. The contents are dense jargon — and to be
honest, the log points in a direction rather than naming the exact broken part — but the files' existence and
count are the clue that matters. Telling a repair shop "panic-full files are stacking up every 3 minutes"
speeds up diagnosis considerably.
Update to the latest iOS
This is how you start ruling software out. Check Settings → General → Software Update, and if
the loop keeps interrupting it, update through a computer (Finder/iTunes) instead.
The last software card — restore once, and only once
If your backup is safe, a computer restore is worth one attempt. If the 3-minute loop survives a restore, software is officially innocent — stop there. Repeating resets is wasted time; the cause is inside the hardware.
Retrace recent history
Before the symptom started: any drops? Any water or heavy humidity? A repair somewhere else recently? That one piece of history can cut the diagnosis time dramatically.
How a repair shop actually solves it

Read the panic log — direction, not verdict
The panic-full log says which process stopped getting responses, which is a real head start. But the log does not name the broken part — the same log entry can come from several different components. The final verdict always comes from swapping parts and testing.
Open and inspect — moisture and connectors
We open the phone and check the liquid-contact indicators, the board for corrosion, and every flex cable and connector. If there is corrosion, cleaning comes first.
Suspect #1 — swap the proximity sensor
In our experience the proximity sensor line is the most common culprit, so that is where we start: swap in a known-good sensor, let the phone run past the 3-minute mark, and if the loop is gone, the repair ends here.
Suspect #2 — swap the charging port flex
If the proximity sensor was not it, the charging port flex goes in next and we test again. Between these two parts, most 3-minute loops that come through our door are resolved.
Still looping — battery, screen lines, then the board
We isolate the remaining lines one by one — battery, screen and the rest — and if no part clears it, the fault is on the logic board and gets reworked under the microscope. Whichever stage ends it, storage is never touched, so your data stays exactly as it was.
Prove it — the 3-minute curse is broken
After the repair the phone runs for a good while past the old interval, and we verify calls (that is the proximity sensor), charging and sensors before it leaves. A screen that stays on past minute three is this repair's passing grade.

Will a factory reset fix it?
Not if the cause is hardware — and with a precise 3-minute cycle it almost always is. Many phones arrive after several resets that changed nothing. One restore attempt with a safe backup is the most that software troubleshooting can offer.
Is my data safe?
Generally yes. The phone is rebooting, not erasing itself, and the repair itself never touches storage. That said, back up first — with any fault, a backup is the cheap insurance.
I never dropped it in water. Can it still be liquid damage?
Yes. Bathroom steam, rain, even sweat can start microscopic corrosion inside, and it can take months to reach a sensor line. We regularly open phones and find corrosion the owner never knew about.
Can I just replace the battery?
Only if the battery line is actually the cause. In practice the proximity sensor and the charging port resolve more of these cases, so rather than guessing at parts, the right order is: check the log, then swap and test to narrow it down.
It started right after a repair somewhere else.
A connector or sensor line may have been damaged during that repair, or a low-quality part may have gone in. Either way, correcting the one affected line usually resolves it. Wherever it was repaired, bring it in without worrying — we will identify the cause first.
The phone works fine for 3 minutes at a time. Can I just live with it?
We do not recommend it. The constant forced restarts are stress on the system, and if corrosion is the cause it keeps spreading. What is a small repair today can become a board-level repair later.
