Motorola Razr 40 Inner Screen Replacement — With a Swollen-Battery CurveballCracked Folding Screen Repair — Downtown Los Angeles
A Motorola Razr 40 (2023) came in with its inner folding screen completely dark — cracked right along the crease, nothing on the display, though the phone itself was still alive underneath. The fix is a full inner screen assembly replacement. What made this one interesting wasn’t the screen, though. It was the battery, which had started to swell just enough to fight us on the one connector that matters most.

| Tech’s note | On the Razr 40, the inner display’s flex cable routes right over the battery on its way to the board. This battery had started to swell — not dramatically, just enough to lift that cable path — and the screen connector simply would not click home. I spent a good while coaxing it into place before it finally seated. Worth knowing: when a foldable’s battery swells more than this one, there’s no coaxing left to do. The battery has to be replaced before the new screen can even connect. A swollen battery isn’t just a battery problem on these phones — it holds the whole repair hostage. |
What a dead inner screen really means on a foldable
Three things we check before anything comes apart.
The crease is the weak point
A folding panel is soft by design, and the crease bends thousands of times. A drop, a bit of grit in the hinge, or pressure on the closed phone usually sends the crack straight along that fold — and once the panel cracks, the display is replaced as one assembly.
Black screen doesn’t mean dead phone
This Razr was ringing and buzzing the whole time — the phone underneath was fine. Photos, messages, everything stays put through a screen replacement. A dark inner display is a parts problem, not a data problem.
A swollen battery blocks the repair
The inner screen’s cable crosses over the battery. If the battery swells, the connector underneath won’t seat — and past a certain point the battery must be replaced before the screen will work at all. It’s also a safety item, so we check it on every foldable we open.
From a black panel to a lock screen
Open both halves, move everything the phone is made of, and fight one stubborn connector.

Opened on both halves
A flip phone is really two phones joined at a hinge, so the teardown happens twice: the camera half on top, the battery half below. Both covers come off and every bracket screw lands on the magnetic mat, in order.

The board comes out
Motherboard, both cameras, and the flex cables lift out of the old frame. On the Razr the display cable crosses the hinge and runs over the battery — this is the path that would cause trouble a step later.

Everything moves house
The new inner screen comes as a complete assembly, so the phone’s internals migrate across piece by piece. Then the hard part: the display connector sits over a battery that had begun to swell, and it refused to click in. Slow, patient pressure — never force, this cable is not replaceable on its own — until it finally seated with a clean snap.
A lock screen where a black panel used to be
New inner display on, hinge folding flat, nothing lost.
Booted straight up on the new screen
Side by side with its old cracked panel, the Razr came up to the lock screen on the first boot — signal, battery, widgets, everything where the owner left it. We cycled the hinge through its fold a few dozen times and watched the crease: smooth, flat, and quiet.

The two questions everyone asks
Straight answers, as always.
Can the Motorola Razr 40 inner screen be replaced the same day?
Usually, yes. The inner display is replaced as a complete assembly, and a foldable screen job runs about 2–3 hours at our bench — drop it off in the morning, pick it up the same day. Your data stays exactly where it is. Foldables are regulars here: read how we handled a Galaxy Z Flip 5 whose touch stopped working for the same kind of repair on the Samsung side.
Why would a screen repair ever need a battery replacement?
Only on foldables, and only when the battery has swollen. On the Razr 40 the inner display’s cable runs directly over the battery, so even slight swelling can keep the screen connector from seating. Mild swelling we can work around, as we did on this phone; past that, the battery has to be replaced before the new screen will connect — and a swollen battery should come out anyway, for safety. We check it on every foldable we open and tell you before any extra work.
